Brown Skua (Stercorarius antarcticus antarcticus)
Usually aggressive and rapacious, this individual allowed close approach. It is of the nominate race found on the Falklands and SE Argentina. It is relatively smaller with paler streaking above and a dark cap, often reduced to a mask in light morph birds as seen here. Other races are larger, darker and less streaked above. Taxonomy is complex but Clements, SACC, IOC, HBW, and H&M all recognize three races, each in a different group. In the past, the large skuas were placed in the genus Catharacta and HBW still uses that older classification. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS
