Chilean Pigeon (Patagioenas araucana)
This dark-billed, purple-bodied relative of the similar Band-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata) replaces it in the temperate forests of Chile and SW Argentina. This species suffered severe declines attributed to Newcastle Disease but appears to have largely recovered. Formerly included with the Old World pigeons in the genus Columba, genetic studies have shown that these New World pigeons are not closely related to them and deserve separation into a new genus, Patagioenas.
