Dolphin Gull (Leucophaeus scoresbii)

Dolphin Gull (Leucophaeus scoresbii)I think the combination of red orbital ring outlined by white and red bill gives this bird a somewhat crazed look. This is a breeding plumage (alternate) adult on top and a juvenile on the bottom. The solid gray upperparts are unusual for a juvenile large gull. In other species the back is scaly with pale feather edges. This distinctive gull is endemic to the coasts of Patagonia in southern South America. It is primarily a scavenger. Here they were going after discarded fish heads. Some authors (e.g. Burger et. al 2018) place this species with other gulls in the genus Larus. Historically it was placed in its own genus, Gabianus. See: SACCprop250 for details on current classification. in Leucophaeus. Formerly called Scoresby's Gull. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS
