Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus)

Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus)
"Yankee Doodle...stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni." by Richard Shuckburgh. Originally intended as an ironic reference to "maccaronism," in which young men in 18th-century England adopted outlandish, foppish hair styles. A person wearing this fashion was called a "maccaroni" or "macaroni", as in the song and comemorated in the English name for this penguin.

These are adults. Note the gold head plumes meet at the forehead. This species is classified as "vulnerable" by IUCN because of severe declines since the 1980's. While they are still common on South Georgia they are not always easy to see. Their colonies are concentrated in steep terrain, often well away from the coast. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
