Mountain Caracara (Phalcoboenus megalopterus) 26 February 2018. Valle del Yeso, Región Metropolitana de Santiago, Chile.
This is a highland species of puna habitat where it typically forages on the ground.. Adults are strikingly patterned black and white, but juveniles such as this are drab brown overall. These juveniles are similar to juvenile White-throated Caracara (P. albogularis) and not always separable. However White-throated ranges further to the south. Formerly lumped with the Carunculated Caracara (P. carunculatus) and the White-throated Caracara, these three are now considered to to be allospecies. Canon SX50 HS.
