Red-gartered Coot (Fulica armillata) 26 February 2018. Valle del Yeso, Región Metropolitana de Santiago, Chile.
This is the largest and most common of the three species of coots in the area. It is easily identified by its yellow bill separated from the pointed frontal shield by a red spot. Red-gartered Coots range in fresh water throughout southern South America. Most coots feed on aquatic vegetation as seen here, but in some areas this species specializes on small grapsid crabs (Cyrtograpsus angulatus).
