All populations are considered endangered. by IUCN with longline fishing being blamed for recent serious declines. Most of the Atlantic birds nest on 6 islands in the south Atlantic Ocean, with the majority on Tristan da Cunha. Some authors split this Atlantic Ocean population from similar birds in the Indian Ocean T. carteri. Atlantic birds differ by having gray cheeks, and larger black eye patches. Here I follow Clements and SACC in lumping the two. The nomenclature of the Indian Ocean population is disputed with Clements following the traditional name T. c. bassi.
