Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher (Ptilogonys caudatus)
28 January 2009, Savegre Mountain Hotel, San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica
Silky-flycatchers are in the family Ptilogonatidae which consists of four
species in two genera of mostly Central American birds.
The Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher is endemic to the higher mountains of
Costa Rica and adjacent Panama. They like to sit on the exposed twig of
the tallest tree where they sometimes catch insects like a flycatcher, but
their diet is mostly berries.
Males and females are similar except that females are slightly duller with
a more olive mantle. I believe this individual is a male.
This individual was perched on a rather distant treetop in front of our
lodge, probably too far away for conventional photography, but a reasonable
subject for digiscoping.
