Silver-throated Tanager (Tangara icterocephala frantzii)
29 January 2009, Savegre Mountain Hotel, San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica
Here we can see the pale pearl-gray throat. This is a bird of cloud
forests. It was fairly common but seldom sat still long enough for a
photo. They feed mostly on berries.
Females and males are similar with the females slightly duller. I judged
this individual to be a male, but I the differences are slight and I could
be wrong.
This is the northernmost subspecies T. i. frantzi which is confined to the
mountains of Costa Rica and adjacent Panama. It is supposedly more dusky
in color compared to two other races which extend south through Panama to
Ecuador.
