Volcano Hummingbird (Selasphorus flammula torridus) - female
27 January 2009, Savegre Mountain Hotel, San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica
Same details as previous.
This is what most of my photos looked like with the bill and part of the
head buried in the feeder. However, this photo shows details of the white
tips to the corners of the tail. These white spots are a good field mark
to distinguish females of the two Selasphorus species at Savegre. Female
Scintillant Hummingbirds lack the white spots and have more rusty in the
tail and flanks.
