Distinguished from other pewees by the white crescent behind its eye, this confiding and common resident is found in both Cuba and the Bahamas. In 1998 the AOU split the Greater Antillean Pewee into three species: the Hispaniolan Pewee (C. hispaniolensis); Jamaican Pewee (C. pallidus) and the Cuban Pewee based primarily on differences in vocalizations (Reynard et al. 1993). This is the nominate race found on the main island of Cuba. Several other subspecies differing slightly in overall color, have been described from adjacent islands and the Bahamas.
