Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus chrysocaulosus) 9 November 2015. Palpite, Matanzas, CU

This greener, longer tailed and more heavily barred subspecies of the Northern Flicker is endemic to Cuba where it is resident. This is a male showing the black malar stripe which females lack. The golden yellow wing and tail linings as well as the grayish area just above the black chest marking are characteristic of this subspecies. Unlike the more familiar subspecies of the North American mainland, this race rarely descends to the ground to forage. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS
