Barred Owls (Strix varia georgica) 30 March 2014. Mahogany Hammock, Everglades NP, Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA.

These are two recently fledge Barred Owls. These owls have whitish down feathers which are gradually replaced by grayish or brownish down-like juvenal feathers. Later juvenal feathers are more adult-like. The result is an odd mix of typical feathers and down. The southeastern population resident in Florida (S. v. georgica) differs from other subspecies in lacking feathering on its toes. The dull yellow unfeathered toes are barely visible in these photos.
