Fox Sparrow (Passerella iliaca) 30 March 2012. Pacifica, San Mateo County, CA Photo © 2012 Joseph Morlan
This Fox Sparrow is a member of the unalaschcensis Group sometime split as a separate species, the "Sooty Fox Sparrow." Fox Sparrows usually forage on the ground, scratching with both feet simultaneously like a towhee. This photo shows their relatively large feet and very long claws.
