Green Heron (Butorides virescens anthonyi) 4 March 2017 - Coyote Point County Park, San Mateo, San Mateo County, CA Photos © 2017 Joseph Morlan

This species is quite small and shy. It is more common in the Eastern U.S. where the nominate subspecies occurs. The Western population B. v. anthonyi, which ranges from northern Baja north to British Columbia, is larger and paler than nominate birds in the East. The rufous of the neck is paler and the white streaks on the foreneck are more extensive on West Coast birds as evident in these digiscoped shots.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FS 3 | 30XWA | hand-held, no adapter.
