Yellow-billed Cardinal (Paroaria capitata)

Yellow-billed Cardinal (Paroaria capitata)
Males and females are alike. This South American species was probably introduced to Hawaii's big island starting in 1972 and is now locally common, mostly in settled areas. Reports of earlier introductions may have been based on misidentifications. Until recently, this species was classified with sparrows and finches (Emberizidae) but genetic studies confirm that it is actually a member of the Tanager family (Thraupidae). It is not closely related to the familiar Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) which is a member of the Cardinal/Grosbeak family (Cardinalidae). This bird shows characters described for the nominate race. Another race found in eastern Bolivia is said to have browner legs and a shorter bill, but these differences are variable and the subspecies may be invalid (Jaramillo 2020). Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
