Hooded Oriole (Icterus cucullatus nelsoni) 1 April 2017 - Sutro Heights Park, San Francisco, CA Photos © 2017 Joseph Morlan.

Historically, this specie's northern limit was Southern California, but the planting of California Fan Palms into Northern California allowed this Palm specialist to expand its range. The first confirmed nesting in the San Francisco Bay Area was in 1939. The species is now a regular local breeder in San Francisco where our ornithology class field trip observed this individual. The California population is assigned to the race I. c. nelsoni which is the most yellow and least orange of all the Hooded Oriole subspecies. Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FS 3 | 30XWA | hand-held, no adapter.
