Blue-capped Redstart (Phoenicurus coeruleocephala) 23 February 2016. Vinayak, Nainital County, Uttarakhand, IN
![]() ![]() We spent considerable time puzzling over this drab bird finally concluding it was a female Blue-capped Redstart. Key features include chestnut brown color to the rump (difficult to see) combined with the strong wing-bar and eye-ring. Note also all dark bill and white lower belly. This species is confined to mountains of Central Asia. The scientific name is spelled caeruleocephala by some authors. However this is an incorrect emendation (Dickinson and Christidis 2014). As with other members of the old-world redstarts, most authors now include them with the Muscicapidae (Old World Flycatchers), but HBW inexplicably retains them with the Thrushes (Turdidae).
