This shy bird emerged briefly from a small patch of reeds. HBW and Howard & Moore place this secretive bird in the genus Zapornia while Rasmussen & Anderton include it with Porzana. Two subspecies recognized. Indian birds are nominate. A widely separated race, larger with brighter red legs, occurs in SE China. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
