Hog Deer (Axis porcinus porcinus) 19 February 2016. Corbett NP, Garhwal County, Uttarakhand, IN

This is a female lacking male antlers. This small oddly-shaped unicolored deer is listed as endangered with overall population down by nearly 90% in some areas. Hunting and habitat loss appear to be the main threats even in protected areas. The population in Corbett NP was estimated at about 100 in 2008 where we had only a few sightings. Currently its range is highly fragmented with a patchy distribution from Pakistan to Southeast Asia. Two subspecies are usually recognized. This is the smaller nominate race. A larger race sometimes considered a separate species, formerly occurred in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam but is now extinct in some of its former range. This species is sometimes placed in the genus Hyelaphus. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
