Indian Softshell Turtle (Nilssonia gangetica) 14 February 2016. Bharatpur--Keoladeo Ghana NP, Bharatpur County, Rajasthan, IN

Formerly classified in the genus Aspideretes, it has been merged with an expanded Nilssonia following a study by Praschag et al. Some authors (e.g. CITES) still use the older name. This species is classified as Vulnerable by IUCN with the primary threats being subsistence poaching and habitat degradation. It is said to be traded in East Asian markets at volumes of 30–40 tons per week. There are four species of freshwater softshell turtles (Family Trionychidae) in India. All have smooth shells and webbed feet. This one has been confidently identified as Indian Softshell Turtle. However this one has received mixed reviews. I believe it may be the smaller Indian Flapshell Turtle (Lissemys punctata) characterized by having hinged flaps on its plastron. But my knowledge of the subject is limited and I would appreciate informed opinions. Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter)
