Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl (Bubo nipalensis nipalensis) 19 February 2016. Corbett NP, Garhwal County, Uttarakhand, IN
This scarce large owl is mostly nocturnal, so we were fortunate to find a pair roosting in daylight. This species has a patchy range from the Himalayan foothills to Southeast Asia, but there is a disjunct population in southern India and Sri Lanka where a smaller more densely marked race occurs. Some authors call this bird the Forest Eagle-owl. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
