Three highly variable species of Ratsnake occur in Hokkaido. Our guide, Takeyoshi Matsuo identified this one as Japanese Four-lined Ratsnake (Elaphe quadrivirgata) based on its oval-shaped, not round pupil and its reddish, not yellowish iris.
