Brown Dipper (Cinclus pallasii)
This fascinating bird foraged by dipping its head into a fast-flowing mountain stream. The feathers around its neck seem bedraggled, possibly because it cannot waterproof this area which is unreachable via preening. Also the freezing cold air combined with the warm water of the hot-spring may have contributed to the spiked collar effect. Three subspecies are recognized differing in the depth of their brown plumage. One is paler than this and one is smaller and darker. This is the widespread nominate race which is dark chocolate-brown overall, including the head, with darker wings and tail. Canon PowerShot SX60.
