Photographed on Poison Oak, these spectacular insects are often called Jewel Beetles. Their larva live in pines scarred by lightning and usually emerge after 2-4 years but they have been known to live as long as 50 years before emerging as adults. This species was formerly placed in the genus Buptrestis.
