Banded Sphinx (Eumorpha fasciatus) 11 December 2017. At sea ~80 miles WSW of Salinas, Ecuador (2°40'S 82°07'W)
![]() ![]() Perched on a golf bag, we suspect this striking moth was attracted to the ship's lights at night. This widespread neotropical hawk moth is highly migratory with some individuals occurring as far north as New England and as far south as Patagonia. Two subspecies are recognized. The nominate race is on the mainland and E. f. tupaci is confined to the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos race differs in its smaller size, brighter pink coloration, and different male genitalia (Kernbach 1962). The Galapagos race is reported to be completely sedentary so our specimen is presumably the migratory mainland race. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Reference: Kernbach, V.K. 1962.
