Northern Tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) 4 January 2017. Southland Museum and Art Gallery, Queens Park, Invercargill, Southland, NZ
Part of an ancient lineage of lizard-like reptiles, the Tuatara is endemic to New Zealand. They are not actually lizards but in the order Rhynchocephalia. They are endangered by habitat loss and introduced predators, particularly on the main islands. Conservation programs include captive breeding. This photo was taken at Southland Museum and Art Gallery in Invercargill which was the first institution to have a Tuatara breeding program. One 111 year-old male is known to have bred successfully here. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS. Reference: Wikipedia contributors. Tuatara. Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. February 10, 2017, 00:13 UTC.
