Yellow-eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes) 6 January 2017. Enderby Island, Auckland Islands, Southland, NZ

Upper bird is a juvenile, lacking the yellow facial stripe of adults. Note pinkish flipper linings. Yellow-eyed Penguin is the sole living member of the genus Megadyptes. It is a rather shy species with nests hidden in deep vegetation. It is endemic to New Zealand and listed as "Endangered" by IUCN. Its small declining population and restricted range are concerns. Although considered monotypic, a 2009 study (Boessenkool et al.) revealed substantial genetic differences between the South Island population and those in Auckland and Campbell Islands. The two groups may represent cryptic species. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
