Silvery Woolly Monkey (Lagothrix poeppigii)
Our reference checklist included Brown Woolly Monkey (L. lagotricha) as the expected species, but based on the descriptions and ranges in Gron (2010) and Fooden (1963) I believe this was actually a Silvery Woolly Monkey (L. poeppigii) which ranges west of the Rio Napo while Brown Woolly Monkey is east of the Rio Napo. Furthermore, this individual shows the rusty body coloration with gray fringing and dark head characteristic of Silvery Woolly Monkey. Classified as "vulnerable" by IUCN, this muscular, acrobatic primate was apparently a rescue animal that had been released into the wild. It showed no fear of humans. The main threat is hunting for subsistence and market. Taxonomy is debated, but I follow Gron (2010) in recognizing four species of woolly monkeys in the genus Lagothrix. This species is variously called Poeppig's Woolly Monkey, Red Woolly Monkey, or Silvery Woolly Monkey. Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
