Hook-billed Kite (Chondrohierax uncinatus uncinatus)
These raptors are widespread in the Neotropics where they feed primarily on tree snails. Note broad paddle-shaped wings, pinched in at the base of the trailing edge. This species occurs in a bewildering array of plumages, gray males (seen here), rufous females, an all dark morph, and a whitish juvenile plumage. In addition, there are two different bill types, one large and one small, perhaps facilitating the partitioning of limited resources. However the large-billed type is quite rare and attempts to study their ecology in detail has been thwarted by the difficulty in finding places where they are easy to study. Even where common, this is a shy species, spending much time perched in the forest canopy. Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
