Lesser Kiskadee (Pitangus lictor lictor) 9 June 2019. Rio Amazonas, Iquitos, Peru.
![]() This small version of the Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) was fairly common, often seen foraging along the edges of water courses. It can be best distinguished from the similar Great Kiskadee by its very different vocalizations as well as its thinner, but longer bill. IOC & HBW place this species in the monotypic genus Philohydor following a recommendation by Lanyon (1984). However this suggestion has not been adopted by Clements/eBird, SACC, AOU or H&M4. Two subspecies are recognized differing only in average size. This is the slightly larger nominate race widespread in northern South America. Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
