Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture (Cathartes burrovianus urubutinga)

Ranging in Peru only along the upper Amazon and tributaries, these vultures could easily be confused with the more common Turkey Vulture or less common Greater Yellow-headed Vulture. This photo shows the distinctive bluish-gray crown and yellow-orange neck skin compared to the red skin of the Turkey Vulture. Lesser prefers river edges and tends not to soar as high as the other species. Two subspecies are recognized with birds in this area belonging to the larger C. b. urubutinga.
