Lettered Aracari (Pteroglossus inscriptus humboldti)

Lettered Aracari (Pteroglossus inscriptus humboldti)

This uncommon species is named for the vertical black marks (letters) along the cutting edge of the maxilla. However this individual has those marks faint or absent suggesting that it is an immature. The black face and head are seen on males at all ages. Females have a chestnut face and head. The dark lower mandible is characteristic of the distinctive subspecies P. i. humboldti which is sometimes treated as a subspecies of the Green Aracari or split as a separate species.
