Red-bellied Macaw (Orthopsittaca manilatus) 10 June 2019. Rio Ucayali--Faucett Creek, Peru
Red-bellied Macaw (Orthopsittaca manilatus)
Note the characteristic roughened skin on their bare yellow faces. This fairly common Macaw specializes in the fruit of Mauritia palms and nest in dead palm tree cavities as seen here. It is a unique species in its own monotypic genus. Its scientific name was formerly spelled Ara manilata for gender agreement, but has been successfully argued that manilatus is a noun rather than an adjective and thus the original spelling stands (David & Gosselin, 2002). Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
