![]() ![]() This individual was perched atop a tall pole in an urban park. The dark throat, light eyes, and lack of an obvious white eyebrow suggest this is an adult. This small neotropical raptor ranges from Mexico to Argentina. About 12 subspecies are currently recognized. This is F. m. occiduus characterized by its gray, not brown upperparts, solid brownish-gray chest, closely barred dull rufous underparts, and brownish-gray tail bands. Although formerly classified as a Buteo, it is now placed in its own monotypic genus, Rupornis following SACC Proposal 460. Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
