Swallow-winged Puffbird (Chelidoptera tenebrosa tenebrosa)

Swallow-winged Puffbird (Chelidoptera tenebrosa tenebrosa)
Note the distinctive rufous belly. Sometimes just called "Swallow-wing," this species is the sole member of the genus Chelidoptera which is Greek for "Swallow-wing." This species is widespread in the lowlands of northern South America east of the Andes. We consistently found them perched high on dead branches along riverbanks, often in pairs or small groups. They forage like flycatchers, sallying after flying insects. Although they are classified in the Puffbird family (Bucconidae), their behavior and appearance is not typical of most puffbirds which tend to forage low to the ground in dense thickets and typically have a much larger bill. Three subspecies are recognized. This is the widespread nominate race. Two paler subspecies are range restricted in parts of Venezuela and Brazil. Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
