Golden-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia chrysopasta chrysopasta) 15 June 2019. Laguna Viejacocha, Iquitos, Loreto, Peru
Golden-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia chrysopasta chrysopasta)
Also known as White-lored Euphonia, this is a male. Note the sides of the breast finely flecked with dusky, and the white chin looking like a milk mustache. Females are similar but have their underparts mostly grayish. Their overall drab appearance and preference for the canopy make them easy to overlook. This is the only one we saw. In fact we didn't recognize it at the time but only identified it later based on photos. Euphonias were formerly classified in the Tanager family, but have since been moved to the Finches (Fringillidae) based on recommendations by Zuccon et al. (2012). Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
