Puerto Rican Woodpecker (Melanerpes portoricensis) 24 January 2012. Sabana, Luquillo Municipality, Puerto Rico


This species is confined to Puerto Rico and Vieques. It formerly occurred in the Virgin Islands, but is no longer found there. This individual appeared to be attending a nest hole in a utility pole. Breeding is said
to begin in January.

In flight these birds show a striking white patch on the rump, usually concealed when perched.
