Puerto Rican Woodpecker (Melanerpes portoricensis) 31 January 2012. Bosque Pinones, Loiza Municipality, Puerto Rico
These woodpeckers are endemic to Puerto Rico and Vieques where they are the only regularly occurring woodpecker. The species formerly occurred in the Virgin Islands, but is no longer found there. It has apparently benefited from reforestation efforts in Puerto Rico. In flight these birds show a striking white patch on the rump, usually concealed when perched.
