Greater Antillean Grackle (Quiscalus niger brachypterus) 28 January 2012. Boqueron, Cabo Rojo Municipality, Puerto Rico

These were abundant throughout settlements, often seen around parking lots and shopping centers. They are the only Grackle in Puerto Rico. This race is endemic to Puerto Rico and is said to be larger than the race in adjacent Hispaniola but smaller than the ones in Jamaica. The purple mantle is said to be more extensive on this race cf. other subspecies.

Females are similar to males but average slightly smaller with a less keeled tail. The brownish secondaries visible in this photo suggest this bird is an immature (SY).
