Sooty Shearwaters (Puffinus griseus) 9 September 2012 at Princeton Harbor, San Mateo Co, CA Photo © 2012 Joseph Morlan

This panorama shows only part of the flock. This species migrates into the North Pacific from New Zealand. They are sometimes seen fairly close to shore along the California Coast in late summer where they even enter San Francisco Bay. However this flock inside a harbor is most unusual. Sooty Shearwaters now hold the record for the longest measured annual migration (40,000 miles) from New Zealand and back.
