Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus falcifer) 28 April 2013. Milagra Ridge, Pacifica, SM CA Photo © 2013 Joseph Morlan

This species is declining rapidly in urban and suburban areas coincident with a proliferation of feral and free-roaming cats. But it is still doing well in more remote chaparral covered hillsides. Nine subspecies are currently recognized. This is one of the darker coastal races with reduced amount of white spotting on the back and tail.
