Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus falcifer)

Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus falcifer)
This species is declining rapidly in urban and suburban areas coincident with a proliferation of feral and free-roaming cats. But it is still doing well in more remote chaparral covered hillsides. Nine subspecies are currently recognized. This is one of the darker coastal races with reduced amount of white spotting on the back and tail. This striking species likes to scratch in the leaf litter and is usually inconspicuous except when singing. Nikon P510 Coolpix
