African Black Duck (Anas sparsa leucostigma) - 1 July 2013. Rivertrees Country Inn, Usa River, Arusha Region, Tanzania.





This is an uncommon species and we only encountered it once. It prefers secluded streams, mostly in upland areas, where it forages along wooded edges. Two races are currently recognized. This is the more northerly race characterized by buffy rather than white spots on the back and a more pinkish bill as seen here.

Sexes are similar. These are two different individuals of a pair.
