African Paradise-Flycatcher (Terpsiphone viridis ferreti) - 14 July 2013. Grumeti River Crossing, Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

Upper bird is a male showing very long central tail-feathers. Lower bird is the female. Males occurs in both rufous and white morphs. This is a rufous morph of the race ferreti which has some white in the folded wing. This individual appears to also have one silvery-white central tail-feather. These variations are reportedly not uncommon in males.

Paradise flycatchers are members of the Monarchidae (Monarch Flycatchers). Numerous subspecies have been described, some of which may occur in Tanzania as migrants from the South. The resident population west from Kilamajaro is normally assigned to T. v. ferreti which ranges to West Africa. This species hybridizes occasionally with Black-headed (Red-bellied) Paradise-Flycatcher (T. rufiventer) leading some authors to lump them.
