Black-headed Gonolek (Laniarius erythrogaster) - 14 July 2013. Grumeti River Crossing, Serengeti
National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.
![]() ![]() In Tanzania, this species has is found only in the northwest part of the country. These striking birds are members of the Bushshrike family (Malaconotidae). Some authors consider it to be a race of the Common Gonolek (L. barbarus) of West Africa. The two form a superspecies. Others, e.g. Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993), lump it with the Crimson-breasted Gonolek (L. atrococcineus) of Southern Africa. However, genetic studies do not support a close relationship between them. Nikon P510 Coolpix Point-and-shoot |
