Black-headed Gonolek (Laniarius erythrogaster) - 14 July 2013. Grumeti River Crossing, Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

In Tanzania, this species has is found only in the northwest part of the country. These striking birds are members of the Bushshrike family (Malaconotidae). Some authors consider it to be a race of the Common Gonolek (L. barbarus) of West Africa. The two form a superspecies. Others, e.g. Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993), lump it with the Crimson-breasted Gonolek (L. atrococcineus) of Southern Africa. However, genetic studies do not support a close relationship between them.
