Black Bishop (Euplectes gierowii friederichseni) - 9 July 2013. Olduvai Gorge Site Museum, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

The heavy black streaks on the back and on the sides of the breast help identify this species. The rich buff breast and black tail and wing feathers suggest this individual is a non-breeding (basic) male. The species has a scattered and patchy distribution across Central Africa. Two races occur in Northern Tanzania. This is the smaller E. g. friederichseni which has a broader breast-band in the breeding male. The larger E. g. ansorgei is found to the west in the Lake Victoria basin.
