Blacksmith Plover (Vanellus armatus) - 12 July 2013. Serengeti National Park, Shinyanga Region, Tanzania.

Here is an adult crouching over a nest with eggs. The dark red eye can be seen. It gets its English name because its alarm call resembles the pounding of a blacksmith's hammer on an anvil. It is widespread throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Males and females are similar. Usually called "Blacksmith Lapwing," consistent with its genus, Clements and eBird unaccountably call it Blacksmith Plover instead. It was formerly included in the genus Hoplopterus. No subspecies are recognized.
