Chestnut-banded Plover (Charadrius pallidus venustus) - 11 July 2013. Ndutu, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Arusha Region, Tanzania.



This is a male. Females lack black head markings. This species is listed as "near threatened" by IUCN. Global population is estimated at 17,500 but the East African population is thought to number only 5,000-6,000 birds. This race has a limited range. It is endemic to rift valley soda lakes on the Kenya/Tanzania border. The nominate race is found in southwest Africa. It is larger and paler with a smaller bill cf. C. p. venustus.
