Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus tricolor) - 14 July 2013. Kirawira Tented Camp, Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

These birds were so common and widespread on our visit, that I almost forgot to photograph one. Bulbuls (Pycnonotidae) are a strictly Old World family of birds usually characterized by long hairlike feathers on their nape, evident in this photo. These birds can become quite habituated to humans and reportedly steal food from safari lodge dining areas, but we did not witness this behavior.

This is the widespread race P. b. tricolor which ranges west of the Rift Valley. It is part of the dark-capped subspecies group which now includes P. b. layardi and P. b. spurius. This group was formerly considered a separate species, the Dark-capped Bulbul or Garden Bulbul.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
